About This Program

What Is Basic Obedience?

Basic Obedience is the foundation every dog needs — a reliable sit, down, heel, and place — and the calm, predictable behavior that comes with knowing the rules of the house. It's not tricks, and it's not a show routine. It's the everyday obedience that means your dog comes when you call, walks beside you on a loose leash, and settles when guests arrive.

We deliver it in your home, once a week, for as long as it takes. Your dog learns where they live — the same rooms, the same doorways, the same triggers — and the obedience holds because it was taught in context. We train you alongside your dog, so the commands keep working long after our last session.

Most clients see meaningful changes within the first two or three weeks. Jumping stops. Pulling on the leash eases. The dog you wanted starts showing up.

  • A proper sit, down, heel, and place
  • Loose-leash walking on a normal collar
  • No more jumping, nipping, or chewing
  • Calm greetings at the front door
  • Reliable place command for guests and meals
  • Owner coaching baked into every session

What's Included

Our Basic Obedience Program Includes

Every program is custom-built for your dog, but every Basic Obedience plan covers the same six pillars.

  • Proper Sit

A clean sit on the first command, held until released — at the door, in the kitchen, on a curb at the corner.

  • Proper Down

Down on cue and a real down-stay your dog can hold through dinner, deliveries, and visitors.

  • Proper Heel

Loose-leash walking that doesn't depend on tools or treats — your dog moving with you, not in front of you.

  • Proper Place

Send-to-place and stay — the single most useful command in a busy household.

  • Greeting Manners

No more jumping, mouthing, or charging the door. Calm hellos every single time.

  • Owner Coaching

We don't just train the dog — we train you. Every session ends with homework you can actually do.

Who It's For

Is Basic Obedience Right For You?

Basic Obedience is the right starting point for almost every dog and almost every household. If any of these sound like a normal day at your house, this program is built for you.

  • Your dog jumps on guests, family, or strangers at the door
  • Walks turn into a tug-of-war on the leash
  • Mealtime, doorbells, and deliveries spike everyone's stress
  • Your dog ignores you the moment something interesting appears
  • You want a calmer house, not a perfectly drilled show dog
  • You've tried group classes or YouTube and the changes didn't stick
  • You're starting from scratch with a rescue or a strong-willed adolescent

Sixty-eight years of combined experience, in your home, on a plan built for your dog — not the average dog.

Dogs learn where they live. Real obedience holds in the kitchen, at the door, and on the leash — not just in a training ring.

  • No Pre-Set Curriculum

Every plan is built from scratch around your dog's age, breed, temperament, and the behaviors you actually want to change.

  • We Train You, Too

Most obedience problems are handler problems. We coach you in real time so the results outlive our last visit.

  • We Stay Until It Sticks

No graduation timer, no upsell ladder. We come back week after week until the behavior is locked in.

Pricing

How Much Does Basic Obedience Cost?

Pricing is set after the free in-home consultation, because no two dogs need the same program. We don't sell pre-priced packages — that's how trainers end up either overcharging you for problems your dog doesn't have, or stopping short of fixing the ones it does.

What changes the number: how many dogs are in the home, how severe the current behaviors are, how far we drive, and how many weeks the plan calls for. We give you the full quote up front, with no upsell scripts and no pressure.

FAQ

Basic Obedience — Frequently Asked Questions

Real answers to the questions South Jersey dog owners ask us most often. Don't see yours? Call 856-248-0802.

Ask a Question
  • How long does Basic Obedience training take?

Most dogs finish the Basic Obedience program in 8 to 12 weekly sessions, but the timeline depends on your dog and your goals. A motivated adolescent picks it up faster than a senior with years of practiced bad habits — and a household with kids, other pets, and a busy front door takes more reps to fully proof.

We don't run on a fixed schedule. We come back week after week until the obedience holds without us, and we'll tell you honestly when we think you're done. No upsell ladder.

  • What age can my dog start Basic Obedience?

Basic Obedience is designed for dogs roughly 6 months and older. Younger than that, the right program is Puppy Obedience — same trainers, same approach, but the curriculum is built around what an 8- to 24-week-old puppy can actually retain.

There is no upper age limit. Older dogs can absolutely learn the foundation commands; we've trained dogs well into double digits. The training takes a little more patience and a little more repetition, but it works.

  • Do you train at our home or do we come to you?

We come to your home. Every session is in-home, and that's not a marketing line — it's the whole reason the obedience holds. Dogs learn in context, and the context that matters is the kitchen, the front door, the couch, and the back yard.

Group facility classes can teach commands in the abstract. We teach them in the place your dog actually lives, which is why the obedience still works on a Tuesday morning when your kid is late for the bus.

  • Will my dog need a special collar or e-collar for Basic Obedience?

Most Basic Obedience dogs work in a flat collar, martingale, or training collar — whatever fits the dog and the household. The tools we use depend on your dog, your goals, and your comfort level, and we'll talk through the options at the consultation before you commit to anything.

We do not believe in one-size-fits-all hardware. If a tool isn't necessary, we don't introduce it. If a tool would dramatically shorten the road to a calmer dog, we'll explain why and how we use it humanely.

  • My dog already knows sit and down. Do we still need Basic Obedience?

There is a real difference between a dog that knows sit and down — and a dog that performs them on the first command, in any environment, regardless of distractions. Most clients who come to us thinking their dog "already knows" find out quickly that the commands fall apart the moment a doorbell rings or another dog walks by.

If your obedience holds in the front yard with a stranger walking past, you may not need Basic Obedience. If it doesn't, the foundation is exactly what's missing — and it's the foundation that makes everything else (recall, off-leash, reactivity work) possible.

  • Can Basic Obedience fix my dog's jumping, pulling, and nipping?

Yes — those three behaviors are the most common reason South Jersey clients call us, and they're directly addressed inside Basic Obedience. Jumping is solved by teaching a reliable sit-greeting. Pulling is solved by teaching a real heel, not a longer leash. Nipping in adolescent dogs is usually a redirection and impulse-control problem, and the place and down commands handle the lion's share.

If your dog's nipping is rooted in fear, resource guarding, or true aggression, you'll likely want our Reactive Rehab program instead — or alongside Basic Obedience. We'll tell you which fits at the consultation.

  • How is Basic Obedience different from Puppy Obedience and Advanced Obedience?

Puppy Obedience is the under-6-months program — foundation work plus potty training, mouthing management, socialization, and the lifestyle pieces young puppies need. The commands are simpler and the reps are shorter because puppies don't have adult attention spans.

Basic Obedience is the core program: a proper sit, down, heel, and place, plus household manners, taught on leash. Advanced Obedience picks up where Basic ends and takes everything off-leash — distance commands, recall under distraction, sit and down in motion. Advanced requires Basic completed first.

  • Do you guarantee results?

We guarantee that we will keep coming back until the obedience holds. No graduation deadline, no "that's all the sessions you paid for, sorry." If something we taught isn't sticking, we come back and re-teach it.

What we can't guarantee is that you'll do the homework. Dogs trained by K9 Standards stay trained when their owners keep the rules consistent at home. We coach you on exactly what that looks like, but the daily ten minutes of follow-through is yours.

  • Do you work with rescue dogs?

A large share of our Basic Obedience clients are rescue dogs, and we love working with them. Rescues come with unknown histories, ingrained habits, and sometimes anxiety that a curriculum-style trainer won't accommodate. We build the plan around what your specific dog can handle today, then expand from there.

If your rescue is showing reactive or aggressive behaviors on top of needing obedience foundations, we'll often combine Basic Obedience with Reactive Rehab work in the same sessions.

  • Where in South Jersey do you serve?

All of South Jersey — Camden, Burlington, Gloucester, Atlantic, Cumberland, Salem, Cape May, and Ocean counties. We travel to where your dog lives, because that is where the training has to happen.

If you're on the edge of South Jersey or just over a county line, give us a call at 856-248-0802. We'll either confirm we serve you or refer you to a trainer we trust.

  • How do I get started with Basic Obedience?

Call us at 856-248-0802 or use the contact form on this site. We'll talk through what's going on with your dog, schedule a free in-home consultation, and meet you and your dog face-to-face — usually within a week or two.

The consultation is no-obligation. You'll leave with a clear understanding of what the program would look like for your dog, what it would cost, and how long we'd expect it to take. From there, you decide.
