About This Program

What Is Advanced Obedience?

Advanced Obedience picks up where Basic Obedience ends and takes everything off the leash. Sit, down, heel, place, and recall — performed at distance, under distraction, in environments that have nothing to do with your living room. It's the difference between a well-mannered house dog and a dog you can trust on a hiking trail with another dog walking past.

The work happens in your home and in real-world environments — front yards, sidewalks, parks, parking lots — because off-leash reliability has to be tested where it actually matters. Basic Obedience is a prerequisite, because the foundation has to be solid before the leash comes off.

By the end of the program, your dog responds to a single verbal command from across a yard, holds position when something exciting walks by, and recalls reliably even with full distraction in play. Off-leash isn't a trick — it's the result of locked-in obedience proofed against the real world.

  • Off-leash sit, down, heel, place
  • Reliable recall under distraction
  • Sit and down in motion
  • Change-of-position commands at distance
  • Real-world proofing in public
  • Foundation for service-dog work

What's Included

Our Advanced Obedience Program Includes

Every Advanced plan is custom-built, but the core off-leash skill set is the same six pillars.

  • Off-Leash Heel

Your dog moving with you, no leash, no treats, no tools — through neighborhoods, parking lots, and crowds.

  • Distance Commands

Sit, down, and place from across a yard or a parking lot, on a single verbal cue.

  • Reliable Recall

Come — under distraction, around other dogs, around squirrels, around food on the ground. The single most important off-leash skill.

  • Sit & Down in Motion

Your dog hits a sit or down on command while walking — without you stopping, slowing, or repeating yourself.

  • Change of Position

Sit-down-stand transitions at distance, on cue, every time. The control benchmark for off-leash work.

  • Real-World Proofing

We test the obedience where it counts — sidewalks, trails, parks, front-yard distractions, and full public environments.

Who It's For

Is Advanced Obedience Right For You?

Advanced Obedience is for dogs who already have a solid foundation and owners who want true off-leash reliability. If any of these sound like you, the program is built for you.

  • You finished Basic Obedience and want to take the leash off
  • Your dog ignores you the moment something more interesting appears
  • You hike, camp, or spend time in places where leashes aren't practical
  • You want a dog you can trust off-leash around other dogs and people
  • You're prepping for service-dog or therapy-dog work down the line
  • You want a recall that actually works, not one that works most of the time

Why K9 Standards

Why Choose K9 Standards for Advanced Obedience?

Sixty-eight years of combined experience getting dogs off the leash and keeping them there.

  • Real-World Proofing

Off-leash isn't a backyard skill — we test it in the environments your dog will actually live in.

  • Foundation-First

We don't shortcut the prerequisites. If your Basic isn't locked in, off-leash work falls apart under pressure.

  • Custom Distractions

Every dog has different triggers. We build the proofing around the things your dog actually struggles to ignore.

  • No Magic Tools

The obedience holds because of training, not because of a piece of hardware. We use what fits the dog and the goal — not a one-size-fits-all toolkit.

Pricing

How Much Does Advanced Obedience Cost?

Pricing is set after the consultation. Advanced Obedience varies more than any other program because it's heavily proofing-driven — how many sessions you need depends on how solid the foundation is, how challenging the environments you want to work in are, and how aggressive a recall standard you're going for.

We don't sell pre-priced packages. You get a real quote up front, no upsell ladder, and we keep coming back until the off-leash holds.

FAQ

Advanced Obedience — Frequently Asked Questions

Real answers to the questions South Jersey owners ask us most before going off-leash. Don't see yours? Call 856-248-0802.

Ask a Question
  • Does my dog need Basic Obedience before Advanced?

Yes — Basic Obedience is a prerequisite. Off-leash work depends on a foundation of reliable on-leash obedience, and skipping that step means the Advanced work falls apart the moment the dog hits real distraction.

If you've trained your dog elsewhere or worked from books and YouTube, we'll evaluate the foundation at the consultation. If the Basic is solid, we move directly into Advanced. If there are gaps, we patch them first — usually inside a few weeks — before the off-leash work begins.

  • Will my dog actually be reliable off-leash, or just sometimes?

The whole point of the program is reliability, not 'most of the time.' A recall that works 80% of the time is the recall that fails when a deer crosses the trail or a kid on a bike rolls past. We train for the 20%.

Reliability comes from proofing — testing the obedience under harder and harder distractions until it holds under all of them. We don't graduate a dog from Advanced Obedience until that proofing is real and the recall, sit, and down hold under pressure.

  • How long does Advanced Obedience take?

Most dogs finish Advanced Obedience in 8 to 12 weekly sessions, but the timeline depends on the foundation and the environments you want proofed. A dog whose Basic Obedience is already rock-solid moves through faster than one that needs foundation patches first.

There's no fixed end date. We come back until the off-leash work holds reliably, and we'll tell you honestly when we think you're done.

  • Do you use an e-collar for Advanced Obedience?

An e-collar is one of several tools that can fit Advanced Obedience, and we'll discuss it openly at the consultation. For some dogs and some goals — long-distance recall, off-leash hiking, service-dog prep — the e-collar significantly shortens the road to reliable off-leash work, used humanely as a communication tool.

For other dogs, a long line and verbal markers do the job without one. The decision depends on the dog, the owner, and the goal. We don't run a one-tool program, and we'll never push a tool you're not comfortable with.

  • Can older dogs learn Advanced Obedience?

Yes — there is no upper age limit. We've trained dogs well into double digits. Older dogs sometimes take a little more patience and a little more repetition, but the obedience absolutely transfers and the off-leash work is achievable.

The bigger question is health. If an older dog has joint issues or stamina limits, we adjust the program — fewer reps, shorter sessions, lower-impact proofing — without compromising the end result.

  • My dog is great in the backyard but ignores me at the park. Can Advanced Obedience fix that?

Yes — that's one of the most common reasons clients move from Basic into Advanced. The gap between 'works at home' and 'works in public' is the difference between unproofed obedience and proofed obedience, and Advanced is built specifically to close it.

We'll do the proofing in the environments where the obedience currently breaks — parks, sidewalks, parking lots — so when we say the dog is reliable in public, we mean it has been tested there.

  • Is Advanced Obedience required for service-dog or therapy-dog certification?

Yes — Advanced Obedience is a prerequisite for our Service & Therapy Dog program. Off-leash reliability is non-negotiable for a service-dog team that needs to perform under pressure in public environments.

Many of our service-dog clients work the path Basic → Advanced → Service-Dog with the same trainers, in the same home, in a continuous program. The handoff is seamless because the foundation is built right.

  • Will my dog be reliable around other dogs off-leash?

That depends on the dog. Most dogs that complete Advanced Obedience can hold a sit or down while another dog walks past, and many can be off-leash around dogs they know. Off-leash around any random dog is a higher bar — and for some breeds and temperaments, it's not realistic at all.

We'll tell you honestly what's reachable for your specific dog. If your dog has reactivity issues on top of needing Advanced, we'll often blend Reactive Rehab work into the program so we're solving both problems together.

  • Where do you do the real-world proofing?

We do real-world proofing in the environments your dog will actually live in — your neighborhood, the local park, the trails you hike, the sidewalk in front of your house. Off-leash reliability has to be tested in real environments, not in an abstract training facility.

If you live in a county we serve, we'll proof the obedience in the places that matter to you. If you have specific environments in mind — a particular hiking spot, a busy downtown — we'll work them into the plan.

  • How do I get started with Advanced Obedience?

Call us at 856-248-0802 or use the contact form on this site. We'll talk through your dog's current foundation and your off-leash goals, and schedule a free in-home consultation — usually within a week or two.

The consultation is no-obligation. We'll evaluate the foundation, confirm whether Advanced is the right next step, and walk you through what the program would look like, what it would cost, and how long we'd expect it to take.
